The Detailing Checklist to Run Through Before Selling Your Car

Whether you're listing on Facebook Marketplace, Carsales, or trading in, the condition your car presents in - both in photos and in person - has a direct effect on how quickly it sells and what buyers are willing to pay. A tired-looking car reads as a poorly maintained car, even if it's mechanically sound. A detail before listing is one of the cheapest changes you can make relative to the difference it makes to buyer interest.

First Impressions Sell Cars

Most buyers form an opinion within the first few photos or the first thirty seconds in person. Dull paint, cloudy headlights, and a messy interior all signal "this hasn't been looked after," which invites lower offers and more back-and-forth negotiation. A clean, well-presented car does the opposite - it signals care, which buyers read as an indicator of how the car's actually been maintained mechanically too.

The Exterior Checklist

  • Hand wash and decontamination - a proper foam bath and clay bar treatment to lift embedded grime that a regular wash won't touch
  • Light paint correction - even a single-stage polish to knock back swirl marks makes paint photograph noticeably better under natural light
  • Wheels, tyres, and arches - one of the first things buyers glance at; brake dust buildup ages a car instantly in photos
  • Headlight restoration - cloudy, yellowed headlights are a strong "neglected car" signal and a cheap fix relative to the impact
  • Glass and trims - streak-free windows and refreshed exterior plastics finish the look off

The Interior Checklist

  • Deep vacuum - seats, carpets, boot, and under the seats where things tend to collect
  • Seat and carpet shampoo - especially important if there's any staining or lingering odour, both of which put buyers off fast
  • Dash, console, and door trims - wiped down and free of dust in the vents and crevices
  • Odour removal - smoke, pet, or food smells are one of the fastest ways to lose a buyer's interest in person, even if photos look great
  • Interior glass - polished clear, since photographers and buyers both notice a hazy windscreen from the inside

Don't Forget the Small Details

  • Engine bay - doesn't need to look brand new, but a wipe-down removes the "this has never been opened" grime that makes buyers nervous about maintenance history
  • Boot space - cleared out and vacuumed, especially if you're using it in photos to show cargo space
  • Tyre shine and wheel finish - a small touch that noticeably lifts how the car reads in photos

Timing It Right for Your Listing Photos

Get the detail done right before you take your listing photos, not weeks in advance. Dust and light contamination build up fast, especially if the car's parked outside, and a detail done too early won't still look fresh by the time you're photographing or showing the car to buyers. Ideally, book it within a day or two of listing.

Why Mobile Detailing Makes This Easier

Since this is usually a time-sensitive job ahead of a listing, mobile detailing removes the drop-off and pickup hassle - we come to you, whether that's Campbelltown, Camden, Narellan, Gregory Hills, Mount Annan, or the surrounding Macarthur suburbs, and the car's ready to photograph or show the same day.

If you're getting ready to list, book a detail and we'll time it so the car's at its best right when you need it.
